The Island of Lopud:
One of the Elephiti (“Dear Islands”), Lopud
has a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, with
plenty of cafes and restaurants. At present,
along with various guest houses, there is
a nice three star Hotel at one end of the
bay, and the much anticipated renovation of
the Grand Hotel has commenced. This hotel
will be at least 4-stars and in the boutique
style, further reinstating the trend for an
up-market approach for Lopud which is fiercely
protected against over development. It is
regularly voted in the top ten of islands
to visit in Europe, having no cars, sandy
beaches and despite easy proximity to the
mainland and Dubrovnik, a far away feel. The
island also has a beautiful arboretum. There
is a network of pathways throughout the island
and most areas can be accessed without steps.
The town has a great mix of charm and style,
and the renovation of the Hotel Grand (on
the centre of the main promenade and beach
area) is completing the emergence of Lopud
as an exclusive and desirable location where
property is hard to find and in high demand.
The 16th century Franciscan monastery at the
side of the harbour is one of several interesting
and picturesque features of the island which
is an intimate 4.63 square kilometres. The
central valley – the villa’s location – is
full of citrus fruit and vine plantations
which, combined with the sea breeze, makes
an invigorating mix. The many paths and large
areas of forest make for plenty of exploring.
Ferries run often to the island from Dubrovnik
all year round (45min) and the island is just
20min away from both Dubrovnik and the ACI
Marina by speedboat. |
